Q Tip # 5: A Man Walked in to a Bar and Asked for a Colonoscopy

Turn fifty years old and (surprise, surprise) your doctor wants to schedule you for a colonoscopy.  Wow!  A birthday present like no other.

Not only do you get to drink a mix that would clean out a clogged shower drain, but someone you don’t know is going to stick a tube in a route that has, to this point, been one way out.  You may be a little nervous.

There is a way to reduce some of the stress.  The University of Ohio experimented with self-selected music intervention during colonoscopies with good results.  Thirty-two patients were assigned to either an experimental group who listened to music during the colonoscopy or  no music control group.  Before and after the procedure, subjects completed the State Anxiety Inventory.  Signs of anxiety, including heart rate and blood pressure, were monitored at four time points during the procedure.  Post procedure analysis indicated that heart rate and blood pressure significantly decreased among the music intervention group during the procedure while remaining unchanged in the control group. Additionally, the group who received the music intervention required less sedation during the procedure than did the control group.

So, as I prepare for my next colonoscopy, I’ll drink the “potion”, find a good book, sleep on the china throne, and head off the next morning with some soothing music on my  MP3 and headphones.  Do what you have to do Doc, Sting and I can take it.
